Nintendo Wii??

Nintendo WiiSo I know no one who reads my blogs really cares much about video games but I still like posting about them. Today Nintendo announced the real name of there next system, which was codenamed ‘Revolution’. It is called the Nintendo Wii (pronounced ‘we’ or ‘weeeeee!!’). You can view their first commercial Here [nintendo.com].

What do I think? First thoughts were I hated it. Everytime I look at it I see WWII. Thats probably because I’m not used to seeing it and people’s minds go to the first word they recognize when they see a word with ‘missing’ letters. Others have mistaken it for Wifi and thought the ‘f’ was accidently left out.

So far everyone seems to hate it. The ‘wee wee’ jokes are out of control on all forums. “Wii hate it”. “Have you seen my Wii?” The jokes go on and on and get cruder and cruder.

Think Nintendo saw this coming? How could they not? IGN, Slashdot, and Digitpress are littered with people who hate it. Nintendo’s official forums is about the only place I’ve found people who like the name.

Back to what I think. Though I originally hated it, right now (30 min. later) I’m getting used to it and even begining to like it. Especially after watching the ‘commercial’ and reading what they think about it — I really see what they are going for.

So I think it’s going to grow on me and I’ll end up liking the name, but I don’t think the same of others. I think most people are going to hate it and forever hold it against Nintendo. We’ll see what happens.

[...] I remember being a little Wii one (get the pun! sigh) and seeing this game in Wal-Mart. There it was just hanging on display in the front with its cool gold colors with that shiny gold cart visible through that little square hole. This was my first adventure game. It was awesome! There is so much to explore! I could really visualize myself going out into this uncharted land. At that age, as we all could, I could really let my imagination go. Zelda is one of the first games for the NES (as far as I know) to use a battery to save your game progress. No more trying to beat a game in one sitting. It was a good thing too because this game was LONG. It’s not long by today’s terms, but back then it sure was. Zelda always stayed interesting with unique enemies that took ever changing strategies, a wide range of items to use, and secrets all over the place. This is truly a classic. [...]
